Using Pigs to Till: Part 1

Time to introduce our newest workers: Polka Dot and Spot! We picked up these cuties over the weekend and are so excited for what they will do for us. What’s important to us in the short term is their snout…is it good for rooting? That’s because these little pigs have a very important job to do as they grow: till and fertilize the garden.

They are currently in our old garden, working on clearing the grass and weeds that were in between the rows. In a few weeks, we’ll move them into what has been a cow pasture for years to help make a new garden plot. Our hopes are, that by May, they have worked up the soil enough that we can plant our summer crops.

The enclosure they are currently in is temporary. It is made almost entirely of things we’ve accumulated for free over the last year: their shelter is an old insulated dog house and is a perfect size for them right now; attached to that is a large dog crate covered in hardware cloth to make it predator proof. We can let them out daily into the rest of their run. Hopefully, it sufficiently strong for their small size. When we move them to the new garden plot, we will use electric fence netting to keep them in and their predators out.
