Easy Crockpot Pot Roast
Last night’s dinner was one of those easy favorites: Crockpot Pot Roast. Put the meat in the crockpot and enjoy the rest of the day. This recipe is perfect for when you don’t have time to spend in the kitchen. We used a venison roast for it this time, though in the past we would typically use beef. If using venison, I would recommend rubbing about 1/4 cup of bacon grease (or other fat) on it to help make it more juicy.
One side dish was mashed turnips, picked last week to save them from the voles. Our girls thought they were mashed potatoes, although we told them several times it was turnips, and they happily ate them. The canned green beans represent an area I want to improve on this year. While these ones came from the store, I hope to increase our green bean production this summer to have enough to preserve to last us all year through. Below is our pot roast recipe.
Ingredients:
- 1 onion halved and sliced
- 1 roast
- 1 packet of onion soup mix
- (if using a venison roast, rub the roast with ¼ cup of bacon grease)
Directions

- Put roast in the crockpot.
- Sprinkle onion soup mix on roast.
- Cook on low for 8 hours or on high for 5-6 hours
- (Optional) just before serving, make a gravy from the juices.
