We take pride in raising these delightful KuneKune pigs at Perennial Acres Holmestead. We have carefully selected the KuneKune breed for its unique qualities and find them to be a perfect match both for regenerative farming and self-sufficiency goals.,
Why KuneKune Pigs?
We’ve chosen kunekune pigs for their easygoing nature and manageable size. Their docile temperament makes them not only delightful companions but also easy to handle. Their grazing abilities make them a perfect livestock to rotate behind our goats as they have a different preference in forage. Furthermore, kunekune pigs are renowned for their excellent meat quality and favorable meat-to-fat ratio. Not only is their meat delicious, but we love using their lard for both cooking and soap making.
Purposeful Land Management
Our KuneKune pigs play a crucial role in our land management practices. These pigs are excellent at clearing and maintaining vegetation, contributing to a healthier and more balanced ecosystem. Furthermore, we are using our pigs to help restore our pond. We have a man-made pond that was dug by the previous owner’s father decades ago. For years, it has been shrinking. We are using our pigs to help seal, or gley, the pond. Additionally, their fondness for cattail roots are helping to remove some of the excess vegetation from our pond.
Breeding Schedule and Availability
We have observed breeding occurring in the fall, making Kunekune piglets available in the spring of 2024. We anticipate our first arrivals at the beginning of March. Our piglets are sow raised for 8 weeks, after which they are weaned and ready to find new homes. In 2024, we anticipate we will have litters ready to go at both the beginning and end of May. KuneKune pigs can sometimes have 2 litters a year and we will provide updates if we are anticipating any fall litters for 2024.
