Rain, rain go away! Not really, but we did have much more rain in October than we expected. Between that, and the cooling temperatures, we haven’t used our rain barrels in weeks. Now that we’re expecting below freezing temperatures, it’s time to winterize them. Which is why I am so excited about the diverter kit we found.
Rain Barrel Converter and Diverter Kit
Like so much that we have acquired this past year, James found a pair of rain barrels on Craigslist. One of them was missing a spigot and we had to figure out how to connect them to our downspouts. The search for a diverter system and spigot led me to this kit by EarthMinded. It has all the components to turn any barrel into a functioning rain barrel. What I love about this diverter is that it allows overflow to drain back into the original gutter/drainage system. Our basement has moisture issues, so we are always looking for ways to keep water moving away from our house. When we transitioned to rain barrels, we wanted to be able to continue to use the drainage system that was installed by the original owners.
We used these all summer and the rain barrels always filled up from the rain. The the overflow system always worked as expected. In addition to the overflow solution, this kit allows the rain barrels to be winterized by unscrewing the diverter and putting the plug in the downspout. This kit was the perfect solution for us and one that we highly recommend! If you’re interested in water harvesting, you may want to peruse Rain Brothers, LLC. This is where we originally learned about this specific system. The kit we purchased is available on Amazon.
